Oakville among top five romantic cities in Canada
When it comes to romance, Oakville is right there — sandwiched between Saskatoon and Regina.
This town rests between the two prairie cities on a recently-compiled Amazon.ca list of the Top 20 Most Romantic Cities in Canada.
Oakville is in fifth place.
Although Victoria, B.C. is on top, Ontario dominates with 11 cities ranking in the top 20 — including Oakville and neighbouring Burlington, which was found to be a little less romantic than Oakville in 11th spot.
“I think Oakville Beaver readers would love to know that Oakville made it in the top five for top romantic cities is Canada,” said Alexandra Julian of National Public Relations for Amazon.ca.
The results clearly show smaller cities rule as most romantic in Canada, while most large cities trail behind.
In a press release issued from Seattle, Washington, in anticipation of Valentine’s Day next Monday (Feb. 14), the Amazon.ca list went like this:
1. Victoria, British Columbia
2. Guelph, Ontario
3. Calgary, Alberta
4. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
5. Oakville, Ontario (new)
6. Regina, Saskatchewan
7. Kingston, Ontario
8. Kelowna, British Columbia
9. Nepean, Ontario (new)
10. Burlington, Ontario (new)
11. Winnipeg, Manitoba
12. Richmond Hill, Ontario (new)
13. Edmonton, Alberta
14. London, Ontario
15. Kitchener, Ontario (new)
16. St. Catharines, Ontario (new)
17. Burnaby, British Columbia (new)
18. Thunder Bay, Ontario
19. Richmond, British Columbia (new)
20. Ottawa, Ontario
This list was compiled by comparing Amazon.ca sales data of romance novels, sex and relationship books, romantic comedy DVDs and Michael Bublé CDs since Jan. 1, 2011, on a per capita basis in cities with more than 100,000 residents.
A closer look at Amazon.ca’s “most romantic” data reveals that Victoria proves brains are sexy too, for not only did that city earn the honour of all-around Most Romantic City 2011, but was also the biggest consumer of romantic books.
British Columbia is home to the top spot, but more than half of the most romantic cities (11 in all) are in Ontario.
Canada’s metropolises (Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver) fail to make the cut this year, bested by places like Oakville, Nepean and Richmond Hill.
Last year’s winner, Saskatoon, fell to No. 4, though it still remains a healthy lover of romance novels.
When it comes to Crazy Love, though not quite placing in the Top 20, Brantford, Ontario, holds the distinction of being the single-biggest per capita purchaser of Michael Bublé CDs.
Kingston is the place where residents are most likely to curl up in front of a romantic DVD, with Calgary and Nepean as close runners-up.
Always the bridesmaid: Calgary is the most consistent consumer of romantic products, landing in the top three of every category surveyed — though never in first spot. reprinted from the Oakville Beaver newspaper.
